Montserrat

Turquoise editor's note: We highly recommend Montserrat! Extraordinary breath-taking post-volcanic activity sights -- warm, gentle and determined people -- great hiking. Go no further to experience the real Caribbean. Latest volcano information - Montserrat Volcano Observatory
Montserrat, British West Indies, Leeward Islands

Known as the emerald jewel of the Caribbean, mountaineous Montserrat shot to notereity in July 1995 when the Soufriére Hills Volcano erupted causing widespread devastation to part of this previously serene island.

This caused many islanders to evacuate the island for safer shores. An exclusion zone around the volcano was set up which still restricts travel to the south end of the island.

In typical fashion, the islanders are actively pursuing massive rebuilding developments, including infrastructure and commercial facilities. A number of lodgings and restaurants are open for business in the safe zone. Affordable villas are also available for short term rental.

Visitors may enjoy Montserrat's breathtaking scenery and unspoiled, unpolluted coral and volcanic delights. There are a number of tour operators currently offering day trips from neighbouring Antigua. For those wanting to stay for longer there are a number of hotels, villas and bed and breakfasts where you can enjoy the laid-back lifestyle of this special island.

Not to be missed is a tour of the Montserrat Volcano Observatory which was established soon after the first eruption. Further information on this undiscovered gem is available from the Montserrat Tourist Board.
