Dominican Republic - Trip Reports

Paraiso de Colon, Sosua

My husband and I just returned from a 'paradise' vacation at the Paraiso de Colón Hotel in Sosua, where we stayed from 2/19/04 to 2/29/04. This was our first trip to the island and not knowing what to expect, we were exceptionally pleased with this family-owned and operated resort.

Our room was spacious, clean with a big picture window and very high ceiling. The daily housekeeping was excellent. The resort was very quiet and provided a very relaxed environment. The plants, shrubs and trees located around the hotel grounds and specifically the courtyard were breathtaking.

The owner, Ms. Leonor Gastaldello, her son, and their staff were personable, friendly and very helpful at all times. They helped to acclimate us into the local culture and customs. They also told us how to access local transportation and negotiate travel costs, etc.

We were especially pleased with the "activities man", Elias Almengot. After taking a short tour of the town with Elias, we found that there were several restaurants, day spas, two beaches and vendors, vendors, vendors all within walking distance of the resort. He arranged for us to take a bus tour to Samana, the furthest point east of the island. From there we took a short boat ride over to "Bacardi Island" (Caye Levantado). There we enjoyed whale watching, a beautiful beach, a buffet lunch, and local music. Elias also gave us a personal tour to Cabarete to see a professional surfing competition.

On Saturday night, during our stay, we enjoyed a dance ensemble from Puerto Plata. The show included merengue and folkoric dances. The ensemble encouraged audience participation. The group was outstanding and featured excellent dancers, both young women and young men.

We are looking forward to our next visit to the Paraiso de Colðn resort!

Thanks to Yolanda and Richard for this trip report ...
