Cuba - Trip Reports

Breezes Jibacoa

August 27/00 to September 2000

We travelled with sky service, time of travel, just under 4 hours. left Pearson airport (Toronto) at exact time. Arrived in cuba around 11 am. No glitches with bus trasportation to resort. Rooms were ready when we arived. Weather- perfect- It is the rainy season but our first week it was hot (34 C). It rained for a bit towards the nite, but that just help to cold down.

RESORT - New, very clean, and looks amazing. Friendly staff. Beach is good but not as clear as Varadero. Jibacoa is about an hour from varadero and one hour from Havana. Tours from the resort are expensive.

Lots of daily activities and nightly entertainment, fairly good.

Buffet was good but repetitive at times, there was of course meat, salads deserts fish, pasta and pizza, for every lunch day. Dinner was better, lobster once a week, as well as a la carte dinner, Martino's restaurant (reservations required, only once per week) was excellent food and service. "la taberna" was also a la carte but no reservations required, the food was mediocre at best. Beach bar included a very decent grill (burgers, fries, fish etc)

5 Bars all with local drinks only. No fancy coconut with umbrella type of drink. Just plain plastic or glass cup.

TIPs - Not required, but expected ($1.00 US) for the most part. Service went to a different level afterwards. Be discrete, management must not be aware of it.

Good buys : RUM for about $4.00 and cigars (Montecristo #2-best but $$$$) leather and wood souviners locally on resort but you'll get better deals outside if you go to varadero (bargain is expected). Our Sunquest person told us that cigars must have the cuban stamp. Not necessarely true.

Final comment:
Would return to same resort!!

Thanks to Peter for this trip report ...
