Antigua and Barbuda - Trip Reports

Galley Bay

We stayed at Galley Bay from October 4 thru 11, 2003. Booked this vacation through Elite Island Vacations. Room category was superior beachfront. Airline was US Air from Philadelphia Pa. This is a direct flight and arrives in Antigua about 2:30 PM. Round-trip transportation from the airport to Galley Bay was included.

This was our first vacation in Antigua. We had decided to vary our vacation destinations after our 20th trip to Jamaica most of which are at the Super clubs resort called Grand Lido Braco. We had also tried a cruise this past February and decided that we are not into cruising. There were two benefits from the cruise. First when we were in St. Johns, we took a taxi to Galley Bay and asked if we could look around. They were very friendly and had the golf cart take us across the pond road then said we were free to roam. We took about an hour to look around and decided we would return. The brochure that we obtained at the front desk listed Elite Islands as the travel agent. The second benefit is a free night at Braco because of a super club promotion on cruises.

To begin the flight out of Philadelphia does not depart until 10:15 AM. No early wake-up (yes!!!). Keep your medications, jewelry, camera and other important stuff in your carryon. Also lots of one & five dollar bills for tipping baggage handlers and taxi drivers. Flight was about 4 hours and uneventful.

I had read about long wait times to clear immigration at the airport. It took about 20 minutes. The drive to Galley Bay takes about 25 minutes.

At check-in we were offered an upgrade to deluxe from superior room. I did not want the second story room and declined. Others arriving took the upgrade. Later in the week I noticed that most all of the Gauguin cottages were being re-roofed. This may be the reason for the upgrade offer.

As I had said, I wanted a beachfront room. We enjoy the sound of the waves and being able to walk out door on to the beach and into the water. Room size, bath, closet space, room safe, hair dryer etc were fine. With the ceiling fans we did not need to use the air conditioning unit at all. I would be concerned if the weather had been much warmer with no breezes.

Beach and pool chairs were always available. Fitness center is air-conditioned and contains a bike, free weights and 1 treadmill down for repair.

The grounds are very nice and the view from the sea grape is great. The age range of the guest was from early twenties to late 70's.

The food service and quality were excellent. The same can be said for the bar service. The staff were extremely friendly and would bend over backwards if necessary.

We will return to Galley Bay

Thanks to John for this trip report ...
