Antigua and Barbuda - Trip Reports

Jolly Beach Resort

We just returned last week from a wonderful time at Jolly Beach Resort. My husband and I were married there on July 15th. When we arrived we received a note saying that we had an appointment with the wedding coordinator for the next day. Beverly, the wedding coordinator was on vacation, so Kerry Ann took care of us. I was a little nervous since she is not the usual wedding coordinator, but she did a great job. She took care of arranging the flowers, photographer, video and a hairdresser and manicure. The hairdresser, Angela, did a wonderful job on my hair. I just loved it. I have long hair and she put it up in such a nice way. She came to my room two hours before the ceremony and did it. Angela works in the beauty salon in Jolly Harbor (next resort over, its walking distance), as does the lady that did my nails. I went to the salon for my nails and she did a wonderful job as well (she did a french manicure). The wedding officer that did our wedding, Evelyn Burns was so wonderful. I was afraid that with the Caribbean accent that we would have a hard time understanding, but she spoke so clearly and said such beautiful things. She made us both feel at ease. The pictures came back the day after the wedding and they were great. They give you a small album with 4X6 pictures with the negatives. The video was very well done; I can't wait to show it at our reception this weekend. So, to all those getting married at Jolly Beach have no worries! It was the most romantic event and I am so glad we picked Jolly Beach. I think Sandals is over priced. If you would like me to e-mail you pictures of our wedding or have any questions please let me know. I'd be happy to help.

On to the trip report.the resort itself was not very crowded since it is the off season but that was okay with us. The food was good and we really enjoyed the Italian restaurant. They had nightly entertainment and we had the bartenders serving us "Jolly Beach Coolers" (very good). They had pina colota / strawberry colota machines with a bottle of rum sitting next to it, so that was very convenient. I made virgin ones during the day at the pool. The fantasy pool was beautiful and had a man made waterfall that falls into it. They have a swim up bar and a grill there that serves burgers etc. The beach was big, and so nice. They have kayaks, hobbie cats and wind surfers available to take out along with lessons. We took the hobbie cat lesson and took it out for a while. They also had jet skis but at an additional cost.

My husband and I went on a catamaran tour around the island. It was the Wadadli Cat cruse. The tour desk said they had the best and biggest boat and were very professional. They were right, we had such a great time. The tour desk warned us not to book tours through the vendors on the beach. Anyway, they picked us up at 8:30am at Jolly Beach and stopped at other resorts to pick up other passengers and we sailed around as the captain pointed out points of interest. We stopped and snorkeled at Green Island, which was nice, I must say I enjoyed snorkeling in Hawaii more since I saw more fish there, but it was nice just the same. The water and scenery were the most beautiful I've ever seen. They fed us a very delicious lunch and we stopped to swim again toward the end of the day. They dropped us off about 4pm. As we were going around the island and seeing the other resorts, I must say, Jolly Beach has the largest span of beach with Pineapple Beach Resort coming in close. The beach at Sandals was small compared to Jolly Beach. They make it look big in the advertisement. As far as the rooms go, the standard rooms are small but adequate (my parents stayed in a standard). They had just enough room for the king bed and that's about it. They did not have a refrigerator or an iron but you could request an iron if needed. The resort upgraded us from a standard to a superior room since we were getting married there. The room had two queen beds, safe, iron, refrigerator, two dressers. The room was clean and the AC worked great.

We had a wonderful time; the staff was friendly and courteous and the resort has beautiful flowers throughout. We can't wait to go back!!

Also, one more thing, the resort told us not to drink the water in the room. Only drink it at the restaurants etc. They said you could brush your teeth, take a shower but to not drink it.

Thanks to Tracy for this trip report ...
